Social Get-Together at Alborz, July 28
Posted Jul 19, 2010 9:58am by Juliette Kernion in Events, Local Businesses, Social | Comments OffPLEASE NOTE: This blog post originally had the incorrect date for this event. The post has been edited with the correct information below.
Date: Wednesday, July 28
Time: 6 pm
Location: Alborz Persian Cuisine, 3300 W. Anderson Lane #300 (near the corner of Anderson and Shoal Creek)
We are most fortunate to have this year’s winner of the Austin Chronicle’s Reader’s Choice for Best Middle Eastern Cuisine, Alborz Persian Cuisine, right here in our own backyard. Next Wednesday, we will meet there to enjoy their top-rated cuisine.
If you have never tried Middle Eastern dishes, your taste buds are in for a treat. There are many fanstastic options available. A few folks from the NSCNA Social Committee will be there as well as the gracious servers at Alborz, who will be happy to help you choose something to your liking. For more information on Persian cuisine and what Alborz serves, you can read these articles on their website and peruse their menu.
The owners of Alborz have graciously offered half-price appetizers during happy hour from 5-7 pm, and a 20% discount on entrees all evening for our get-together on Wednesday.
Freshtah Kosari, the gracious wife of owner Moe Kosari, volunteered her amazing face painting services during our Independence Day celebration this year at no charge. We appreciate their involvement and support of our neighborhood and are excited to show our gratitude with our patronage.
In order to know how many tables we will need to set aside, we must have an RSVP if you are going to attend as well as how many will be in your party. We must have at least 10 people RSVP to hold the event, so please let us know as soon as you can if you plan to attend — by this Friday, July 23 if at all possible.
To RSVP or if you have questions, please contact Amelia Cobb at 364-5519 or ameliacobb [at] comcast [dot] net. Hope you’ll join us.

Village Redevelopment Project
Posted Jan 21, 2008 2:58pm by Chris Jones in City Planning, Local Businesses | Comments Off
The Village Shopping Center is the area that includes the Alamo Draft House, Obee’s, Fuddruckers, etc. It was purchased last September and the new owners, the Lamy Group, intend to take the existing 147,000 sq. ft. and expand it to 645,000 sq. ft. of residential, retail and office space. In order to accomplish the increase in density for this development, they are asking for a zoning change from GR to GR-VMU (Vertical Mixed Use). To see the City case information for this Zoning change, go to this site and search by Case Number using: C14-2007-0207
In theory, VMU allows for increased density and a mixture of residential, retail and commercial to encourage a more efficient use of the property. It should also encourage people to play, shop, and work closer to home, and to use public transportation more frequently. In exchange for relaxed standards of setback, height, and parking, etc., the City requires that 10% of the residential units be set aside as “affordable housing.” The affordable units are funded by HUD and administered through the Austin Housing Authority. For more details about VMU, see the City of Austin website.
