Council approves Corridor Improvements Consultant contract award
On Thursday, Feb. 9, the Austin City Council approved an item at its regular meeting that allows staff to negotiate a contract with HDR Engineering to be the Corridor Improvements Consultant. The Consultant will work with City of Austin staff to conduct analysis and collect public input for the 2016 Mobility Bond Corridor Improvement Projects.

Corridors are some of the main roadways in Austin used for getting around. Not quite highways but larger than neighborhood streets, they are destinations as well as home to many residents and local businesses. Corridors are typically multi-modal, with people walking, biking, and using transit along them. Think of North and South Lamar, Airport Boulevard, and Slaughter Lane—these are all corridors!

We're hiring a Capital Improvements Consultant to assist with a range of tasks. They are:
  • Assist in the development of the Corridor Construction Program as directed by Council’s "Contract With Voters."
  • Capture best practices and lessons learned to accelerate projects so we can meet the goal of completing the bond program in eight years.
  • Develop a plan to communicate with and engage the community.
  • Develop and assist in the implementation of a Minority-Owned Business Enterprise (MBE) and Women-Owned Business Enterprise (WBE) outreach plan for participation in the Corridor Program.
We went through a competitive processes, in compliance with state statutes, to select a firm to be the Consultant. This is a typical process used for many big public projects, and requires a vote from City Council for city staff to enter into negotiations with the selected firm.

We look forward to seeing you out there for public input opportunities later this year and hearing from you.

At the Feb. 28 Council Work Session, city staff will provide City Council with more information about 2016 Mobility Bond projects that will be addressed in the first year of the bond program as well as prioritization and other processes currently underway. You can watch on Spectrum Cable Channel 6 or at ATXN.tv.
Last month we announced the creation of the Corridor Program Implementation Office. Now we have a webpage. Come visit us at AustinTexas.gov/CorridorOffice. We are working hard to get more information up, so if you can't find what you're looking for, please call (512) 974-7840 or email us.
Want to read the Corridor Plans? All of the completed plans are available online here or may be viewed at some of the Austin Public Library branch libraries. Go to Library.AustinTexas.gov and search "Corridor Development Program" to find locations of the plans. The plans were developed through public input and technical analysis. They are being used as the basis for further analysis to develop recommendations for corridor improvements to be funded through the 2016 Mobility Bond.
Did you know?
When City Council called the bond election for the $720 million proposition for voters to consider in November of last year, they also passed a “Contract With Voters.” The contract is a formal resolution, and it lays out priorities for the $482 million investment in corridor improvements, such as reducing congestion, improving level of service and reducing delay at intersections for all modes of transportation, and connectivity and improved effectiveness of transit operations within the corridors and throughout the system. Read the contract here in English. It’s also available in Spanish here.
