  • NSCNA Safety Committee Meeting, July 25

  • Sustainable Neighborhoods, July 20

    Sustainable Neighborhoods of North Central Austin will have its monthly meeting on Tuesday, July 20. Here is the meeting information from their recent mailing:

    Street Trees, Sidewalks on Burnet, Lamar

    Burnet and N Lamar are the public face of our North Central Austin neighborhoods. They have their gritty charm, but for the most part they are ugly and unsafe for pedestrians and children. They encourage policymakers and developers to make the kinds of comments we heard during the VMU process: “Anything is better than what you have now.” That’s not true. We have to fight that kind of thinking by taking better care of our streets.

    The Sustainable Neighborhoods meeting on Tuesday July 20, will look at concrete steps we can take to make both Burnet Rd and N Lamar Blvd more attractive. An obvious place to start is with street trees – to complement the sidewalks that are part of the proposed Mobility Bond Package. Where might trees be planted, what species would be appropriate, how would they be maintained?

  • MoPac Short-Term and Long-Term Changes

    Work on MoPac Boulevard, which stalled about four years back, is about to start again. The immediate plan is to resurface the road between downtown and RM 2222, which will result in some noise reduction. A lane also will be added on the northbound side crossing the river, easing congestion on the bridge.

    Longer term, a fourth “managed” lane will be added in each direction, stretching from Parmer Lane to downtown. Those lanes, which could be open as soon as 2016, may help commuters in our neighborhood.

    According to the Austin American-Statesman:

    The Texas Department of Transportation is spending $3.6 million this summer to resurface the stretch from RM 2222 to Lady Bird Lake with a special asphalt that dampens road noise and is less slick in rainy conditions. And workers will add a northbound lane on a troublesome bridge just north of the river by restriping part of the shoulder.

    A long-term plan will add a fourth, “managed” lane on each side of MoPac (Loop 1) from Parmer Lane in North Austin to the river.

  • Membership Committee Shares Survey Results

    The 2010 NSCNA Membership Committee would like to thank all NSCNA member households who participated in the membership survey distributed at the May 4 General Meeting. We also thank the additional 29 members (out of 48 who were randomly selected from the membership roster) who completed and returned the survey by mail.

    The purpose of the survey was to identify what considerations are important to North Shoal Creek neighbors in making a decision to join the neighborhood association. The Membership Committee reported these findings to the Board of Directors and requested they consider these priorities when making plans and decisions that affect the neighborhood.

  • Independence Day Parade Photos

    I hope you enjoyed the NSCNA Independence Day Parade and Celebration this weekend. We had a great neighborhood turnout and a fun time was had by all.
