  • Candy EllardWe received the following email from Huddie Murray at Pillow Elementary:

    North Shoal Creel Neighbors,

Pillow received a surprise visit from HEB on Thursday. The occasion of the visit was to name Candy Ellard as one of five State Finalists in their Teacher of the Year competition! Candy will go on to interviews, etc., and a decision on the winner will be made in late April/early May. We are so proud! Congratulations to Pillow teacher and North Shoal Creek resident Candy Ellard once again!

    Huddie Murray

Ms. Ellard is a recipient of a Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. We previously wrote about this honor here: Statesman’s Q&A with Candy Ellard.

  • The following message is from Alissa Schram, Capital Metro Liaison.

    Hi Folks,

Many of you I know and have met with in the past. For those of you who I have not had the pleasure of meeting yet, I am your CapMetro liaison.

This is just a reminder that fall service change public meetings and hearing for many of the ServicePlan 2020 route changes are scheduled for next week. The Board Meeting at which these changes will be voted on is April 26. Here is the link to the Proposed Fall Service Changes: http://www.capmetro.org/docs/Aug%202010%20-%20Service%20Change%20Proposals.pdf .

    This may be the largest service change Capital Metro has ever proposed, so I urge you to review these changes now, as some of them will impact your neighborhoods. Specifically, routes 9, 29, 6, 7, 10, 17, 18, 23, 30, 37, 171, 228, 243, 300, 320, 323, 328, 339, 350, 383, 392, and 653 will be impacted.

Thank you for your assistance, and feel free to contact me any time.

  • The 83rd Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays will take place in Austin this week and travelers in the downtown area should be aware of road closures and potential traffic delays this weekend. With over 50,000 visitors expected to attend this event, closures will take place for the safety of pedestrians in the area.

Access to downtown from I-35 will be maintained but slightly reduced. Closures will take place from 6 pm on Friday, April 2 to 4 am on Saturday, April 3, and again from 2 pm on Saturday, April 3 to 6 am on Sunday, April 4. Below is a link to complete list of road closures for both days.

Each year, the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays brings together the best high school, college and professional athletes from Texas, the U.S. and the world. The event runs March 31 through April 3, and is held at the Mike A. Myers Stadium, on the UT campus.

For more information about the event, visit the Texas Relays page at the Texas Longhorns website.

  • The Funky Chicken Coop Tour starts this weekend, on Saturday, April 3. Austin-area residents are inviting the public into their backyards to see their chickens and chicken coops. They will also be on hand to answer questions. It is legal to raise chickens within the Austin city limits, and it has become a growing trend as people turn toward organic gardening and a more sustainable future.

A mobile chicken coop will also be raffled off to one lucky winner.  Visit the information center located at Buck Moore Feed and Supply to enter the drawing.

There are five chicken coops nearby in the Allandale, Crestview and Brentwood neighborhoods and a total of 17 stops throughout Austin.  View the map here.

This is a free, self-guided tour that runs from 10 am – 4 pm.  The tour will go on rain or shine.
