The Austin Transportation Department (ATD) is proposing changes to Shoal Creek Boulevard from 38th St. to Highway183. The changes are intended to increase the safety and mobility of everyone using the street. In December 2018, ATD staff held open houses to gather input; in March, staff held open houses to publicize the options they developed. These options, along with a survey, are now online at the project’s webpage, www.AustinTexas.gov/ShoalCreekBlvd.
Three options are presented for North Shoal Creek’s section of the street:
1) Option X: a no build or no change option
2) Option Y: adds a one-way bikeway
3) Option Z: adds a two-way bikeway.Options Y and Z come with pedestrian improvements at the Steck and Anderson Lane intersections along with the following new sidewalks:
1) a new sidewalk from Mossrock to 183
2) 55’ of new sidewalk south of Steck
3) new sidewalk from Anderson to Foster.ATD staff say these options will “result in comparable motor vehicle levels of service and provide space for an additional protected bikeway.” Studies show protected bikeways increase safety for bicyclists more than do painted line bikeways.
Diagrams of the proposed changes are posted below. You can view slides showing all the proposed changes from 38th to 183 at www.AustinTexas.gov/ShoalCreekBlvd. You can give ATD your input about the proposed changes using the survey available at http://www.surveymonkey.com/r/ShoalCreekBlvd.
